Happiest of Days

"Hap birtday to you!"

She repeated over and over again.

The sweetest words and best present she could have given to me. A wonderful birthday gift.

Those words were accompanied by many other thoughtful gifts I continued to receive that day. A box of beautifully wrapped candies from the Cordial Cherry. Five fragrant bath bombs holding the promise of a relaxing soak in the tub in my near future. A beautiful bouquet delivered to my front door. Cards with sweet words and sentiments sent from near and far. Hugs, well wishes, and sweetly sung tunes from co-workers and friends.

My heart was filled to the brim. I felt loved, cherished, appreciated, and celebrated! I am truly lucky.

Birthdays have a tendency to lose their excitement as the number gets bigger, and the adult responsibilities feel heavier. But, if you choose to mark the day, and set aside time to celebrate the past year. To celebrate that you made it and note where you would like to be by the next milestone. I believe that you can make your birthday count.

If you feel like you would like to add a little joy to your day, try these tips...

Mark the day. Oftentimes, people want to celebrate your birthday. Don't be shy, let people know your birthday is coming up. And certainly, let them know when it is your actual birthday!

Spread the word. Believe it or not, some people do not like celebrating their birthday. That's ok, different strokes for different folks. I, however, am not one of those people. But, I have found that many adults wait to see which of the two you are. If people don't know you enjoy your birthday, they may not make a big deal out of it.

Plan to celebrate. Whether it be a dinner out, a big party, or a family outing: plan to do something out of the ordinary to mark the day. Change up your routine a little. Celebrate with the people you love and who will make you feel special.

Treat yourself. Don't leave the gift giving to others (although that is nice too). Get out there and buy yourself something special. A fancy coffee from your favorite place, a pedicure, that candy from the check-out lane you usually resist. Big or little, you deserve it.

It may take a little work, but try and celebrate your birthday. And let those around you know how much you enjoy it. From personal experience, you will not regret it.
